Navy Fighter Jets Current - U.S. The Navy's next fighter jet will be designed exclusively for naval service and without cooperation resulting in variants for other services. The unnamed fighter, tentatively called the F/A-XX, will replace the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet strike fighter on the decks of naval ships sometime in the 2030s.
Flightglobal, reporting from the Navy Sea-Air-Space League conference in National Harbor, Maryland, says the Navy has decided it has different priorities than the US Air Force. Angie Knappenberger, the USN's deputy chief of staff for air warfare, told reporters that the Navy does not plan to use the fighter to penetrate enemy airspace, a key requirement for the US Air Force's Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) aircraft. forces.
Navy Fighter Jets Current
The NGAD will replace the F-22 Raptor, the first fifth-generation fighter in US military service. In addition to stealth, sensors and lethality, the aircraft's design will emphasize long range, potentially accompanying bombers such as the upcoming B-21 Raider on deep penetration missions deep into enemy territory.
The F 35c Will Transform The U.s. Navy
The Navy, on the other hand, plans to use standoff missiles for deep penetration missions or leave the missions entirely to the Air Force. The Navy will have no capabilities it doesn't plan to use, which should keep costs down. The aircraft will likely share something in common with the F-35C, the carrier-based version of the F-35.
The Navy's current air wings have four fighter squadrons each equipped with the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. The short-term goal is to replace half of the Super Hornet fleet, the older half, with the F-35C Joint Strike Fighter. - The C carrier variant has a slightly larger wing, longer range and more powerful, more robust landing gear than the standard A version. The long-term goal is for the F/A-XX to replace the remaining Super Hornets, leaving each air wing with two F-35C squadrons and two F/A-XX squadrons.

Pete Pilcher, a former US Navy F-4 pilot, is a retired test pilot with 34 years of experience with McDonnell Douglas and later the Boeing Company. He served as director of test for the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and flew the F-4 Phantom, F-15 Eagle and F/A-18 Hornet.
I knew I wanted to be a test pilot since high school. So I majored in aeronautical engineering at Texas A&M University, then went to flight training school in Pensacola, Florida, and served as an F-4 pilot in the US Navy.
Reflecting on my four decades of service in the Civil Aviation, one of the highlights of my career is my time as a test pilot for the F/A-18 Hornet.
The Air Force Admits The F 35 Fighter Jet Costs Too Much. So It Wants To Spend Even More
As one of several test pilots, I was deeply involved in the development of the jet in order to make it easier to fly so you could spend more time operating the weapon system. The Hornet has a gravity limiting system, so it is extremely difficult to overstress the aircraft. With no limit on the angle of attack, the pilot can maneuver the aircraft at will. This is critical for pilots when conducting missions.
Test pilots and designers worked together to make this a reality. I am extremely proud of the way the F/A-18 flies. The old adage "hard work pays off" is certainly true when it comes to the F/A-18 program.
The Super Hornet is the backbone of the Navy's combat fleet. It has stood the test of time and has a longer lifespan than its competitors. As a testament to its design, the Super Hornets and EA-18G Growlers are currently the only Navy aircraft programs to achieve an 80% readiness goal—allowing the F/A-18 to operate at a high operational tempo. However, due to increased use of the aircraft during recent conflicts and threats abroad, the Navy is facing shortages in its fleet. Such a deficit will worsen without additional F/A-18 funding.
The F/A-18 Super Hornet is designed to be easy to maintain as well as easy to fly. The upgraded Block III model continues this legacy and comes with an upgraded 10,000 hour life to ensure it remains the foundation of our future fleet. The F/A-18 program has proven itself ready today, and – with upgraded capabilities and life cycle costs – the Super Hornet is poised to continue its winning legacy and reputation as a reliable spearhead for the Navy.

Not only is the F/A-18 one of the most dynamic platforms in the DoD toolkit, it is also one of the most cost-effective. The analysis found the Super Hornet has the lowest cost per flight hour of any fighter in the Navy's inventory at $19,000 per hour.
With its track record of cost success as well as its reliable supply chain, it's no wonder the F/A-18 continues to be the Navy's multifaceted fighter.
There are many opportunities for compromise when it comes to budget priorities; however, security and national defense cannot be one of them. It is imperative that Congress invest in proven, capable, and successful defense programs that will serve our needs now and in the future.
I saw the passion and meticulous work that goes into the production and testing of the F/A-18 Hornet. I have flown this amazing aircraft and continue to be impressed with its capabilities, adaptability and ease of use for our Navy pilots. I also believe in the future and that it is a smart investment in our current and future security.
Differences Between Navy And Air Force Fighter Pilots
As citizens, we must do our part to impress upon members of Congress the need for funding for the Super Hornet III block. We must ensure that the lifeblood of the Navy's combat fleet is fully funded in the coming years to avoid depleting our nation's aviation inventory and jeopardizing national security.
