Glock 19 Small Hands - Glock released the Gen 4 line of pistols in early 2010, which addressed some caliber-on-frame durability issues and brought some minor exterior changes. After about seven years, we are introduced to the next generation of the Glock line. The Gen 5 differences are similar on the surface, but there are some interesting changes that aren't immediately apparent.
I have been using my Gen 5 Glock 19 since late August and have put about 4,000 rounds through it since then. I ran it for static accuracy and in dynamic defensive drills from concealment with and without a light attached to the rail. I spent time taking it apart, learning about internal modifications and parts replacement issues (Glocks are fun hobby kits).

Mainly, the Gen 5 Glock 19 is just a Glock 19, but there are some interesting and odd changes that warrant testing. There are also some caveats that first-time buyers should be aware of. I hope to cover most of them here, but keep in mind that this data is from less than 2 months of use, several times a week. More time can tell more stories.

Most of this review deals with the differences of the Gen 5 from previous versions and the specific issues of the Gen-5 user (carrying, shooting, accessories, etc...). For a more basic review of the Glock 19, I encourage you to read my Glock 19 Gen 4 review here (“Review: Glock 19 Gen 4 – After 80,000 Rounds”).
Also note that the photos shown in this article do not represent factory new guns. Instead, these are photos of people using guns heavily several days a week. They beat a little.
The first and best reason to consider this gun is that it is a Glock 19; Arguably the best multi-purpose pistol ever made. It's large enough to be a duty pistol and offers functional accuracy and substantial magazine capacity, yet small and light enough for everyday carry.
Also, the excellent reliability record that Glock pistols provide cannot be ignored. From my own experience, I've shot over 100,000 rounds through Glock Gen 3 and Gen 4 pistols, and the only failures I've experienced are non-Glock replacement parts and a Cerakote job that fails. With stock components, the Glock pistol performs flawlessly even under harsh conditions.
The Glock 17 Pistol's Coolest Movie Moments
Specific to the Gen 5, you can consider the new Glock 19 for two strong reasons. First, the slide lock lever is now ambidextrous. So if you are left handed, change the mag release to the right and you have a completely left handed gun. For those of you who like Glock pistols, but not grip finger slots, the Gen 5 features a flat face front strap on the grip. No customization required.
Gen 5 offers very little new to the shooting experience with two notable exceptions. The Glock 19 has always been a smooth-shooting, easy-to-handle pistol, consistently outperforming 99.9% of shooters with accuracy. The new Gen 5 barrel and flat front grip strap add to the experience.
Having shot Gen 3 and 4 Glocks a lot, I found the lack of finger marks noticeable. I was used to the grip filling my strong hand and now it feels different. I don't find the difference to be bad, but the finger grooves fit my hand perfectly and I miss them on this gun. I know a lot of people have never liked it, and many will be happy with this change.

Review: Glock Gen 5 G19
The new barrel profile is meant to double accuracy at longer ranges (4" groups at 50 yards, Glock claims). I haven't had enough to get 4" groups at 50 yards yet, but my groups at 25 yards is a lot. smaller with the Gen 5 than with my Gen 4 shot. I found out. I can't say for sure, but I'm guessing it was due to a more accurate barrel.
The trigger on the Gen 5 probably feels a little better than the Gen 4, but it's subjective and hard to say. The Gen 5 trigger assembly is completely different from the Gen 4, set up like a Glock 43. It has a "New York" trigger spring that uses a polymer spring carrier and a compression spring (instead of a expansion that attaches the bar to the cruciform.) I tried a 3.5 pound connector and there was no difference in press weight. So I tried a 2lb plug and got the 4.5lb press I expect in my guns. interesting
Most of the 9mm ammo I put through the gun was 115gr ball, but I ran rounds from an assortment of Federal Premium 147gr Hydra-Shock JHP, Spear Gold Dot 124gr + P GDHP, Federal Premium HP, HP 124g. Critical Defense 115gr and Hornady Critical Duty 135gr...all with impeccable performance.
I haven't experienced any in ~4000 rounds with my Glock 19 Gen 5. The only significant issue I can report is that during the first 1000 rounds I occasionally felt a little hesitant when the first round was fired of the magazine. Instead of the standard "chick" sound/feel of a slide going into the drum, sometimes the "ka-chunk" round felt a bit unstable with the chamber. This anomaly disappeared after about 1000 rounds and never affected the gun's performance. Each round is reloaded and fired.
Glock 43 Vs. Glock 26 Comparison
Like all other Glock pistols, the trigger on the Gen 5 G19 is too angled for grip and is generally uncomfortable for the middle finger of a strong hand when firing. Therefore, I suggest that every Glock pistol should have a Dremel tool carried sideways and down with the grip on the jack joint to create a smooth, reduced profile. Other than that issue, the Glock 19 is comfortable enough. There are some who would disagree that the G19 or any Glock pistol is fine without this little mod work. With this change, I found the Gen 5 Glock 19 to be very comfortable. Without it, it is unusable. I personally would never own a Glock that didn't fit this way. Definitely a nice Gen 6 update.
The Glock 19 is not fast by any means and the recoil is very easy to handle. The magazine release position is nice and my average hands have to modify my grip a bit to get it in position to operate it (as I do with every pistol I've made). Even with the Glock's minimalist slide-lock lever, my grip often interfered with the lever, and I found that the gun occasionally wouldn't open the magazine for the last round. This is in no way the gun's fault. it's all me
Although compact, the Glock 19 is larger than some in this category. However, with a good, well-made holster, it can easily be hidden in many positions on the belt, inside or outside the waist. I carry a Glock 19 with the light in the append position every day and never have a printing problem.
Note, however, that concealment is handled significantly by the holster and its settings. Most holsters made for concealed carry are poorly made, not set up to properly angle the gun to aid concealment. Watch out!
Pistol Recommendations For Small Hands?
The Glock 19's fifteen-plus-one capacity is plenty, especially for a compact. There is no mistaking that the Glock 19 sets the standard for size-to-capacity ratio in the pistol world.
The Gen 5 Glock 19's unadorned slide features a black Melonite finish that is treated with an nDLC coating. The result is a darker color and a longer lasting finish. I love this new finish and the aesthetic it offers. I don't know if it's more durable or not. However, I can say that repeatedly dropping it on the gravel during training has scratched the finish slide and sweep points, as shown here:
The streaks shown above are from doing a few dozen reps of the "wounded wing" exercise shown here:
The polymer frame is the same as the Gen 4, the sides of the grip are lightly glazed to mimic a magwell (it's just an imitation), and the finger scratches on the front strap will disappear. The Gen 5 also has only one pin near the locking block instead of the 2 pins common in recent generations. Perhaps because of this change, the bezel is slightly wider and slightly taller than the Gen 4. The grip texture is identical to the Gen 4 and is useful unless your hands are wet or bloody (so , tick if your Glock carries a pistol).
